Health Tip: Understanding Orthotic Inserts

(HealthDay News) -- Custom orthotics are specially made devices designed to support and comfort the feet, ankles and legs.

Orthotics are made typically after a podiatrist has conducted a complete physical evaluation of these areas, the American Podiatric Medical Association says.

If you are considering orthotics, the association suggests these things to keep in mind:

  • Consider your health. If you have diabetes or other problems with circulation, an insert may not be the best solution. Consult your doctor for the best approach.

  • Select a product that's suited for your planned activities.

  • When fitted for orthotics, be sure to bring the shoes you intend to wear.

  • Once the orthotics are produced, try them on and walk around a bit to see how they feel.
