(HealthDay News) -- Cold weather dangers -- such as ice-melting chemicals and sleet -- can affect your pet's health, says the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
To help keep your pet safe this winter, the ASPCA urges you to:
Remove snow between your pet's foot pads. Towel dry your pet after walks.
Wash and dry your pet's feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals.
Never shave your dog down to the skin during the winter.
Avoid bathing your pet during cold spells.
Keep coolant and antifreeze far away from your pets. It is lethal.
Feed your pet a little extra during the cold months.
Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep.
The ASPCA says if it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pet. Keep your pet inside.
