Ask the Expert: Sedentary Job and Weight Loss

Question: I work in a sitdown job and can't lose weight. Any suggestions?

I'm a 5'1 female who weighs 220 pounds. I'm up at 5 a.m., work at a sitdown job all day and am home by 6:15 p.m. I need very much to get this weight off and will do whatever it takes to do it, but I've tried everything. I really don't like how I look right now. Can you help? Thanks!.

Therese Brewitz responds:

You have taken the first step by writing to us.

To get started on the right note, make an appointment with your doctor to get a medical check-up and a green light to start a weightloss and exercise program.

Look into different resources for exercise, a local health club, a walking group, or a friend who shares your desire to get more active. You will really benefit from the support, whether from professionals or from friends.

Give yourself time to adjust to new habits and routines, both when it comes to diet and exercise.

Start with 1/2 hour walks 3 days a week and add a day every week. You will soon notice that you miss your exercise on your days off. So be patient, but determined.

Best of luck,
