Fitness & Weight Loss Reimbursement

Interested in living a healthier lifestyle? Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts makes it easy with two reimbursement programs designed to help you better manage your health and reduce your risk of developing a future illness.

To verify these reimbursements are included in your plan, log in to MyBlue or call the Member Service number on your ID card.

Fitness Reimbursement

Your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts health plan can save you money annually for health club membership fees or for fitness classes taken at a qualified health club.

3 Easy Steps to Getting Reimbursed

  • Choose a qualified fitness program.
  • Complete the fitness reimbursement form once you pay for the program.
  • Mail the completed form to the address listed on the form.

The following Membership or Fitness Class fees qualify for the Fitness reimbursement:

  • A full-service health club with cardiovascular and strength-training equipment such as treadmills, bikes, weight machines, and free weights.
  • New in 2019! A fitness studio with instructor-led group classes such as yoga, Pilates, Zumba®, kickboxing, indoor cycling/spinning, and other exercise programs. Note: These new services qualify for reimbursement beginning with 2019 health plans.

What Doesn’t Qualify?

  • One-time initiation or termination fees.
  • Gymnastics, tennis, and pool-only facilities.
  • Martial arts schools, instructional dance studios, country clubs or social clubs, sports teams or leagues.
  • Personal trainer sessions.
  • Fitness equipment or clothing.

Weight-Loss Reimbursement

Your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts health plan can save you money annually in qualified weight-loss programs.

3 Easy Steps to Getting Reimbursed

  • Choose a qualified weight-loss program.
  • Complete the weight-loss reimbursement form once you pay for the program.
  • Mail the completed form to the address listed on the form.

The following program fees qualify for the Weight-Loss reimbursement:

  • Hospital-based programs and Weight Watchers® in-person.
  • New in 2019! Weight Watchers online and other non-hospital programs (in-person or online) that combine healthy eating, exercise, and coaching sessions with certified health professionals such as nutritionists, registered dietitians, or exercise physiologists. Note: These new services qualify for reimbursement beginning with 2019 health plans.

What Doesn't Qualify?

  • One-time initiation or termination fees.
  • Food, supplements, books, scales, or exercise equipment.
  • Individual nutrition counseling sessions, doctor/nurse visits, lab tests or other services that are covered benefits under your medical plan.

Important Information about Fitness and Weight-Loss Reimbursements

  • Reimbursement is for each individual (or family) plan per year. You have until March 31 of the following year to submit a request. Reimbursement for some groups may differ.
  • We’ll make a reimbursement decision within 30 calendar days of receiving a complete request. Keep copies of proof of payment in case we request it from you.
  • Reimbursement may be considered taxable income, so consult a tax advisor.
  • Before starting an exercise or weight-loss program, be sure to talk with your doctor.
